Thought brass was yr nemesis for boilers? 😊
OK for the tiny ones like this though ......
I prefer scrapers for varnish since they don't clog, I've had similair issues with sandpaper when refinishing gun stocks before I started using scrapers. Doesn't even have to be a real one, can just be a razor blade used perpendicular to the surface. Cheers
Would turning the flywheel bearing through 180 degrees realign it with the cylinder per chance?
That is not the solution. Please watch the rest of the series where I show what the problem is }:-)))
@@keithappleton Was just a thought, look forward to seeing the rest of the series.👍
It’s a charming thing
I don’t think this is a traction engine,it looks more like a portable steam engine. These predate traction engine’s,they were dragged into place by horses. They drove thresher’s and mining equipment,as they were probably much cheaper than a traction engine. Nice little toy though, should be interesting to see it run.
Yes, I agree but it does have grooves for a drive band, which then makes it self powered and hence my description being "Traction Engine" and not "Portable Engine" . . . . .
@@keithappleton I would agree with you Keith, it's a prime mover, a stationary engine would surely have shafts for a horse to pull it.
Looks like a lot of fun bringing this gem back to life. You also stay safe and extremely healthy!
As per the very early traction engines - drive from flywheel to rear wheel by chain. Just missing the ships wheel for steering.
and not forgetting the Horse }:-)))
nothing more than 90 degrees so good
When I was doing my carpentry apprenticeship 50 years ago I was told any light mineral oil will do, but most carpenters carry 3 in 1 oil anyway. I found that a squirt of WD40 does a good job as well. Having it in a plastic box will be useful as once the stone matures it will be saturated in oil and in the olde days oil stones were kept in home made wooden boxes and they too become saturated in oil leaving an oil mark on any wooden surface, like a carpenters bench. Many oil stones come double sided a fine and medium. Modern times have updated tool sharpening and now-a-days I use diamond stones which use water as the lubricant and come in multiple grades even up to 1200 for very fine finishes.
Thanks for the info, I think that I will also buy a Diamond stone too }:-)))
Regarding the pipes on that organ, do they actually work?
Not sure, I think some probably do work, as inside the machine there is a lot of air piping.
@@keithappleton Fair enough! It's a very interesting band organ!
Awesome job. That Trigon insert is one of my favorites because it has six useful sides instead of four like a typical 80 degree insert. I really like the looks of the column. It reminds me of a girlfriend I used to have… You also stay safe and extremely healthy.
3 in 1 oil works, generally most light oils will work for sanding/grinding, though dedicated cutting oils like Tap Magic will work better since they're specifically for cutting. Tap Magic also smells good too, that's how you know it's a quality product. :p
Thanks for the info!
To clean the stone use a piece of cork from a bottle of wine...and you get to drink the wine too...bonus
Good Idea - Cheers }:-)))
❤ an essential piece of kit along with a glass lapping plate 😊 3in1 works for me ! The smell is most nostalgic! 😊
I totally agree!
Hi Keith, you could always use an alternative I've heard, call them cylinder drain taps? Love the videos, no intention of building anything, but I like your descriptions and delivery. Cheers, Bryan
I usually call them Cylinder Drains on the UA-cam Videos }:-)))
Can this be used for cleaning port faces?
Yes you can, that is the main reason I bought the stone.
@keithappleton Thank you. I'm currently rebuilding a 5" gauge sweet pea, and your channel has been a massive help. Keep up the good work 👍
Much more coming up shortly }:-)))
I inherited an India stone from my father, sadly I dropped it on a concrete floor and it broke! I got another from Lidle, and its great!
I use a stone to “polish” tool blocks flat that mate with the turret on CNC lathes where I work. The youngsters tend to tighten the tool blocks down with tiny swarf chips between them, thus embedding them into the blocks. Then they comment that they don’t understand why the tools are chattering… I think the stone I use is an “Arkansas” stone. It’s a very fine grade. Made in the USA is probably the plastic box… Thanks for sharing this very informative video with us. You also stay safe and extremely healthy for a long, long time!
The plastic box is the worst bit, this one arrived with a crack in it . . . .
Doing figure eights is the way to properly lap parts but my preference is to go back and forth at 45 degrees and then rotate the part 90 for a couple strokes to make a nice fine cross hatch pattern. If your stone becomes clogged, dull or warn uneven you can refresh it like new by lapping it with light pressure in figure eights on a piece of glass or polished granite with some medium valve grinding compound from the auto parts store. I do this to my 30÷ year old Norton stone every few years using a slab of hardened ground tool steel I have. You can also use stones on the lathe like a file if you need to shave a few tenths of a part. There's many types used in the tool making trade which are very handy.
👍😎👍
Any light oil will work. WD-40 works great as does the oil you are using. I am a millwright/machinist, and I stone surfaces on a regular basis.
Thank you, it is encouraging to know that i am doing it right }:-)))
Even better are stones which have been ground flat. Normally used as a pair so that they can be rubbed together to clean and keep flat. They are ideal for use on machinery as they will not cut a flat surface but they will remove the tiniest of dings. If you have a friend with a surface grinder they can be easily made. Diamond stones are also extremely useful for de-burring operations.
I'm guessing the "mini sharpening station" refers to the box it came in. Hope you didn't pay extra for it !
No it was free }:--)))
Hi Keith, a good idea when using oil stones is use a "figure of eight" movement, using all of the stone's surface, having sharpened woodworking chisels for some 40 years I have always used methylated spirit as a lubricant.
Keith I think that the "Mini Sharpening Station" mentioned on the plastic box is the plastic box itself. Notice that the top of it has a couple of plastic bits that stick out and form a rectangle. I think the idea is that you put the stone on top of the box, inside of the rectangle and the rubber feet on the bottom of the box will it hold the whole setup steady while you use it.
Mexico is the 51st state of the United States. 🤣
}:-)))
I believe the sharpening station is the box. You close it and put the stone on top and there you have it.
Just what I intended to say! 5:39 clearly shows the plastic lugs that hold the stone in place, though you are better making off making something out of plywood because the boxes tend to flex and develop cracks.
Exactly. The box has rubber feet to hold the box from moving around. And the top of the lid has little guardrails in the corners to retain the stone from slipping off the box. 👍👍
ive worked as a machinist my whole life. still learning neat tricks here and there. enjoying the videos allot
😅😅😊
It was alot of fun watching you machine that stainless steel. Great Job! Looks awesome! You also stay safe and extremely healthy!
Keith, my understanding is that pitch and tpi are the same thing. Pitch being the distance between adjacent threads. The difference between US and Imperial threads is the thread form, 60 degrees for US and 55 degrees for Imperial ME.
Great video. Thank You for sharing your personal life concerning girlfriends with us. You also stay safe and extremely healthy!!!
I’m pretty sure thread pitch and threads per inch are the same thing just measured differently. They are defined as the inverse of each other.
Thread pitch can also be the pitch diameter measured with a pitch micrometer or using 3 certain sized pins and a regular outside micrometer. The pins are straddling the threads, 2 on one side 1 on the other. They are very hard to hold and mic at the same time, but there are ways to do it with patience and practice. All the information about pin size and pitch diameter tolerances are in the Machinst Handbook. For internal threads you use thread gages for the pitch diameter you are making, or you can make your own. I always wondered why they would use the same nomenclature for two different parts of a thread, but I suppose the oldsters knew what they were doing…
wow, first comment, what a honor! I subscribed for some years now, and i am always glad to see your videos, new or older. I don't have the budget for live steam, but i have some growing knoledge of it thanks to you; that i will be able to put in practcie the day i can afford some (can't wait) because i find it a relaxing hobby that you can actually "touch". Also i'm alwways amazed of your "atelier" and your way of presentation, along with your filming style, it is defenetly a winner combo in my opinion. Thank you for sharing, and greetings feom Belgium
Thank you for your kind comment {:-)))
😊
1:28 Cheers
Great Job. I find your videos always have useful information in them. You also stay safe and extremely healthy!
Great Job! I think it’s more satisfying to make parts completely by scratch. My hands are big so my fingers stay in the glove… You also stay safe and extremely healthy!
The only time I wear gloves in the shop is when I am loading or unloading raw stock, but never when the machinery is moving. I had a friend who was a printer operating a large press, he wore gloves to protect his hands from paper cuts. One day the glove on one hand got caught, His nick name is now Mickey as all three fingered guys have to stick together.
I can't exactly say why, but I really enjoyed seeing how how you fabricated the lever. Thank you.I PS: I 've used Brasso since the mid-60s. It's excellent stuff.
Starting with a casting probably wouldn’t have saved any time. The time to run to Black Gates or order one takes time and petrol. The one you made is more than adequate and it looks quite nice.
A bit of rubbing alcohol on a rag will remove errant Sharpie ink marks. No need to sand them off and scratch up the part’s surface.
I think you are maybe missing the point. I am obviously aware that a solvent removes Sharpie pen marks, but I need to scratch all of the surface to key the metal for the paint.
@@keithappleton Yes, I realized that later when you roughed up the entire plate. The comment was really intended as an alternative for the folks that might not know that alcohol can remove “permanent” marker.
5:51 6:43 Cheers
Great Job! I noticed the precise calibration of my eyes depends on which glasses I randomly pick up. You also stay safe and extremely healthy!!!
❤
Proper job 😊
Great Job, thanks for sharing. You also stay safe and extremely healthy!
Just an idea: Would it work to spin the tank in the lathe while heating it. That would sling the solder to the edge instead of having it in a layer on the bottom. Your method shown does work well, just an idea. Very good work.
I would not like to do that as spinning the part would fling out the solder around the edge - it works perfectly fine as I show it and it is a safe method.
man there is a lot of parts to a small steam engine
Especially a 3 cylinder Triple Expansion Engine . . . .
105 Key
The cylinder castings don’t look great.
